Attraction Overview
Founded in 1955, the National Museum of History (NMH) was established following the vision of then Minister of Education, Mr. Chang Chi-yun, who emphasized the importance of social education. Inspired by the Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C., and built within the Taipei Botanical Garden, NMH was originally named the “National Museum of Historical Relics and Fine Arts” and formed part of the “Nanhai Five Museums” cultural complex along Nanhai Road. The museum officially opened on March 12, 1956, and adopted its current name on October 10, 1957. It played a pivotal role in promoting cultural education and civic engagement in postwar Taiwan.
Since May 20, 2012, NMH has been administered under the Ministry of Culture, further strengthening its local cultural connections while serving as an important platform for Taiwanese art on the international stage. Over the decades, the museum has continuously expanded its exhibitions, modernized its facilities, and hosted a variety of landmark exhibitions, offering the public a diverse cultural perspective and chronicling the development of museums in Taiwan. NMH aims to continue advancing Taiwanese arts and culture, integrating resources to become a leading institution for understanding Taiwan’s modern and contemporary social and cultural history, while enhancing Taiwan’s visibility and engagement internationally.
